Two men with ties to La Crosse are canoeing the Wisconsin River with hopes of setting a new speed record.
Jay Thurston, 75, Viroqua, and Mike Kinziger, 60, Moscow, Idaho, reached Stevens Point today on a 436-mile trip that began on Friday June 13th.

Thurston is a retired administrator for the La Crosse Public Schools and Kinziger formerly was an instructor at UW-La Crosse and now is a professor at the University of Idaho.
The two set a speed record for canoeing the Wisconsin back in 1983, finishing in just over eight days. This marks the 50th anniversary of Thurston’s first record-setting trip down the Wisconsin as he canoed the river in 12 days with Gary Kitzman in 1958.
