JAY AND MIKE ON STAYING ON SCHEDULE
The time schedule is an estimate, an educated guess, and keeping on or ahead of schedule, will depend upon wind direction and speed; and upon current flow and river volume. We have an open canoe and if we’re facing a high wind on any of the large lakes we may not be able to proceed until the wind subsides n thus we will be behind schedule. If we encounter a thunderstorm we will have to get off the water until the storm passes.
There are twenty-six portages on the Wisconsin River that vary in length from 30 yards to over one-half mile. Although, people may want to help (carry our canoe for example on a portage) we will refuse assistance. Like the Voyagers who paddled the route 300 years ago we carry our own load.
Behind every dam is a lake where the current is slow to practically non-existent. The largest of the lakes is twenty mile long Pentenwell -- the second largest lake in Wisconsin.
Our speed can vary from six miles per hour where we have a strong current to one mile per hour where we are paddling into a stiff wind on a lake. Thus considering the difficulties of paddling the Wisconsin River from source to mouth, 436 miles, keeping on schedule will be due to more than our persistence and canoeing skill.
