Jay Thurston and Mike Kinziger reached the Mississippi River, Friday, after seven days, three hours and 45 minutes of paddling.

They crossed the finish line at 7:45 a.m. and were working on coming ashore at Wyalusing State Park at about 8:45 a.m.

The pair broke the record they set in 1983 for canoeing the river by a full day. They, however, were about 18 hours off the itinerary they set for themselves, to finish in six days and about 13 hours.

Near the mid-way point in their journey, Thurston and Kinziger were a full day behind on their itinerary, but they made up time quickly after reaching Wisconsin Rapids.

They came ashore on Thursday night near Woodman, after canoeing 86 miles in the day -- their longest single-day distance ever on the Wisconsin.

Now that the trip is done, Kinziger will head on an eight-hour journey, by car, to visit his parents with his wife Deanna. Meanwhile, Thurston will return to Viroqua to rest and recuperate.

The Broadcaster will recount the final days of their journey in its print edition for June 26 and will carry more updates on this as necessary. There also may be an interview with Jay Thurston posted on this chain in the coming days.

" Brother Jay and Mike, congratulations on a tremendous journey! What an outstanding achievement you have accomplished. You had so many difficult and dangerous obstacles to overcome due to very high winds and water levels at flood stage. We've been praying and cheering for you all the way. We are very proud of you and are so happy you're safely home.
Thank you, Diana, for providing daily support to the guys for this venture and communicating their progress to us. Also, thanks to Matt Johnson for his wonderful media coverage. "

" Congratulations Jay and Mike on completing a "probably impossible trip" and fulfulling your 25 year old promise to canoe the Wisconsin River again especially at your age which is in itself a record. Being in top physical condition, planning, skill and experience were big factors plus the support from Diana in breaking your 1983 record. We're proud of you! Thanks Matt Johnson for your wonderful articles to keep us updated on their progress. "

" I've had a lot of fun following the adventures of Jay Thurston and Mike Kinziger as they canoed the Wisconsin River. I'm glad they were not only able to complete their trip, but also that they were able to beat their time from 1983. Let's see a couple of other guys with a combined age of 135 do that! When Jay started talking about this, he said it was probably impossible. It's something the mind has to talk the body into doing. Jay and Mike showed a lot of spirit and determination. I thank them for sharing their trip with our readers.
