The devil is in the details for Vernon County when it comes to replacing the courthouse’s ancient tile roof.
The county board’s buildings and grounds committee received bids recently to have the 70-year-old roof removed and replaced with a 16-ounce copper roof.
Committee chairman Jerry Cade told the county board, Tuesday, that Kulps, LLC., of Stratford was the low bidder with a bid of $319,000.
However, recently asbestos was discovered in the roof, which will require removal, Cade said. The amount of asbestos wasn’t known as of Tuesday. Cade also said that a standing seam steel roof was found underneath the tile. The bid calls for the successful bidder to remove the entire old roof, but Cade said that Kulp’s has said it hadn’t planned to remove anything other than the tile.
Previously the county board approved spending up to $365,000 to repair the courthouse roof with an additional 10 percent contingency. Cade said Tuesday that even with the asbestos abatement and removal of the steel roof under the tile, the job should be able to be completed by Kulp’s for less than what has been approved.
In addition, the Vernon County Board approved setting up a $1.2 million line of credit, for which it will seek bids from area lending institutions.
The line of credit will help the county pay for projects such as the construction of a new courthouse roof and a $278,000 bailer for the solid waste/recycling facility, which the county board approved for purchase from Recovery Systems, Tuesday.
