White-tail breaks through window at Viroqua business

A white-tailed deer made an unwelcome visit to a downtown Viroqua business late Sunday afternoon, crashing through a double-pane glass window.

The deer, one of a group of three whitetails that wandered into the downtown historic district, lept through the window at Thrivent Financial, 217 N. Main St. The deer broke the window and destroyed items in the office. The call for the incident came to the Viroqua Police Department at 4:55 p.m., Chief Mark Rahr said.

The deer ran out of the Thrivent office and up West Terhune Street, by the Western Technical College where it was destroyed by a Viroqua Police Department officer. The deer had cut itself badly on the broken glass.

The other two deer, adult antlerless white-tails, escaped the city by running east and exiting the city limits through the Viroqua Cemetery.

It’s not the first case of white-tails wreaking havoc in Viroqua. In the mid-1980s, a whitetail ran headlong into the front door at Viroqua City Hall on Main Street. The glass to the door broke, Rahr said, but the deer didn’t get in the building. That deer also escaped the city.

" There once was a deer from the counrty, I don't know his name so we'll call him Guntry. He lived east of town out of route 56, you know the road that their trying to fix? He headed to town on a sunny spring day, hoping that fun adventures were headed his way. Through the side streets he wandered nibbling on flowers and grass, saying "hi" to the chickens when they he did pass. As he came to the corner of Main and Terhune, he knew he was a gonner if he didn't act soon! Cars to the left and cars to the right, the ones on their cell phones gave him quite a fright! No one pays attention when they zoom down the street, if you don't slow it down Ol' Guntry's fate you might meet. He ran to the middle then back to the white line, right about then is when he saw the sign. It was Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, he needed a policy for his wife and family of ten. He went running in crashing straight through the glass, when he heard all the sirens he knew they'd called the Brass. He exited quickly still not using the door, tipping over the chairs right onto the floor. He hung a quick left, to his home he would head, and that's when it hit him..one bullet...BOOM...dead!!! "
