Two Vernon County residents are facing federal charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine and distributing cocaine.

A sealed indictment was returned by a grand jury in Madison on April 23 accusing Lyle I. Dank, 51, and Marilyn K. Seidel, 40, of the charges. They were arrested on Tuesday, April 29.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy O’Shea, who is handling the prosecution of the case, said the Vernon County Sheriff’s Department handled the entire investigation into the matter. O’Shea said the investigation began in January and continued into April. Due to the nature of federal indictments, no details are available regarding the investigation.

“Outside of the charges, the details are not yet a matter of public record,” O’Shea said. He added that this is consistent with almost all federal prosecutions.

If convicted, Dank and Seidel face 20 years in prison on each count and a $1 million fine.

Both Dank and Seidel were arraigned in federal court on Friday and entered not guilty pleas. U.S. Magistrate Judge Theresa Owens set a trial date for the pair for Aug. 18. Dank and Seidel are being detained pending trial. A pre-trial conference in the case has been scheduled for July 10, O’Shea said.

According to the state’s circuit court computer database, Dank previously spent 10 years in state prison on sexual assault charges. He was released in 2004. When prosecuted on those charges, Dank was already being prosecuted as a habitual criminal. Dank's last recorded Vernon County address according to the state's sex offender database was in Westby.

Seidel served 18 months in state prison for possession of cocaine from a case in 2001 and has been previously tried as a habitual criminal. She was also convicted of felony drug charges in 1995. Seidel's address listed in a court document in February of this year was rural Viroqua.

" I would venture to bet that there are more people with the coke problem than you think. And some are people that you would never guess are that type. If not using but selling, its all about the $$$$$$$$$$ "

" And we are sickntired of the criminals being the ones who are seemingly protected. They made those choices and now they need to learn to live with the consequences. In some cases, they are put up in what some would call luxury accommodations and receive free college educations and wages for working that they are allowed to keep, instead of being used for restitution. Yes, this is not EVERY case, but I have a family member who sees these "facilities" and sees how some of these prisoners are allowed to live on a regular basis, and these situations are more widespread than most of the public is aware of. Who are you to say that the rest of us who are in danger because of these people shouldn't know of their past crimes? You have no right to make this decision for us. If you don't want to know, fine. WE DO, and society has EVERY right to know. It is too bad that those who try and defend these repeat offenders aren't the only ones that they harm. "

" Some people never learn. Let's hope this time they keep them off the streets.I think it's important to know there pass. "

" These people get arrested just last week on federal drug charges and you don't think its a news story? I'm glad you're not running the newspaper. As for the criminal past, I find it incredibly relevant that one of the people is a convicted sex offender who spent 10 years in prison and the other is a two-time felony loser on drug charges. What planet are you ON? "

" you are to report the news not the criminal past of the accused. The broadcaster is so hard up to find stories to print... What a joke! "
