The Vernon County Health Department confirmed Wednesday afternoon that one case of measles had been reported in Viroqua.
County health department director Beth Johnson was sending information to area schools Wednesday afternoon. She said the health department will be offering immunizations.
According to the Mayo Clinic, measles is a highly contagious airborne pathogen which spreads primarily via the respiratory system. The disease is also known as Rubeola. It is characterized by a rash, cough, runny nose and red eyes (conjunctivitus). Those with the disease also can run a high fever up to approximately 104 degrees.
The incubation period usually lasts for 4n12 days (during which there are no symptoms). Infected people remain contagious from the appearance of the first symptoms until 3n5 days after the rash appears. Bedrest, fluids, respritory aids and low-light are ways to minimize symptoms. No treatment can get rid of an established measles infection. However, non-immunized infants may be given the measles vaccination within 72 hours of exposure to the measles virus, to provide protection against the disease.
When contacted, Johnson was pressed for time and said more information on the situation would be available later. The Broadcaster will post the information on its website as it becomes available.
The Vernon County Health Department’s telephone number is 637-5251.
