The case of measles reported in Vernon County, Wednesday, involved one unimmunized student who attends Youth Initiative High School in Viroqua.

The State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services released the information late Wednesday saying state officials were working with the Vernon County Health Department to identify the source of the disease. However, they said it likely is not associated with an outbreak of measles in the southeastern part of Wisconsin.

Currently the state has seven laboratory-confirmed cases of measles, as well as two cases of rubella. State officials said both of these diseases can be prevented by vaccinations.

Beth Johnson, the Vernon County Health Department Director, said Thursday afternoon that her office is continuing to work with schools to get out more information on the local case. The Vernon County Health Department’s telephone number is 637-5251. The State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services can be reached at 608-266-9622.

" "Agree," I am not sure what you think the benefit is of attempting to insult those with a different opinion than yours and dismissing their opinions simply because they are different than yours, by trying to "label" them. I think you might find it interesting and educating to know there are many who disagree with your position on this issue who would never be labeled as you put it, as a "tree-hugger." I believe it is just as irresponsible, lazy, as well as dangerous, to not check things out for ourselves and just go along with what others tell us is best for us without checking it out for ourselves. There have been life-long health complications AND deaths due TO vaccinations, as well as due to the lack of them. I am from the generation where antibiotics were described for every sniffle. Now, look at how damaging that the experts are telling us they are. Sometimes, they are the exact same "experts" that over-prescribed them. There are many people who have been made into invalids because of the over-prescribed antibiotics and now they even tell us we are all in danger because there are "super-bugs" because of this very "over-prescribing."

Anytime we blindly follow propaganda like a flock of sheep, and do everything that everyone tells us to do instead of thinking for ourselves and basing our decisions on unbiased FACTS, we are in trouble as a country and as a society. I believe that people need to weigh the risks and benefits on BOTH sides of this issue and make the best decision possible. As was brought up in an earlier posting, listen to the news for even a short amount of time and hear about all the side effects and complications, including death, due TO "DR. PRESCIBED" medications that they at one time assured us were safe.

I also find it interesting that in many, if not all cases, where vaccinations are involved; we have to sign a release saying we will not hold them responsible in case of complications, death, etc. If there were no danger, whatsoever, why would they make us sign these? There are too many instances of documented cases (AND cover-ups that are later brought to light) of complications and permanent disability and death due TO vaccinations to just stick our heads in the sand and blindly go along with what other people think is best for us. "

" I know all the ANTI-Vax arguments. I still agree it is irresponsible to NOT vaccinate children. Back in the "Good Old Days" young children and babies DIED from preventable (deadly) diseases! Do we really want to go back there?! Even if one or two children get sick from the vaccinations today, it is better than THOUSANDS DYING because they are NOT vaccinated. Think about it! Measles can have serious complications too. Rubella can get pregnant women's babies disabled for life!
"

Vaccinations are not as safe as you think wrote on May 7, 2008 5:27 PM:

" First of all, the law states that parents can choose not to vaccinate their children for both religious and personal reasons.

I have read several articles and books on the subject, and there is a lot of information about vaccines that have resulted in autism, other difficulties, as well as death. So for those of you out there who think that parents who do not vaccinate their children are not concerned about their safety, think again. I for one am more concerned about my child dying or having brain damage than I am concerned about them catching measles, which is not generally a deadly disease.

Many doctors believe that vaccines actually impair our overall immune systems, and do not provide complete immunity. While a bodies own system can become stronger by fighting one of these diseases, and it will result in true immunity.

I agree with the poster who mentioned that we are all doing the best we know how to protect our family. "

" I agree why don't some of these, for lack of a better word treehuggers get it together and put there kids safety first. "

" I am wondering why these parents would not take the extra steps to ensure there childs saftey. It always seems to be the same "type" of person that preaches about the earth and about family values, but they are the ones not taking the time or money to keep there child healthy. I for one am glad that I am no longer in school, I don't want to catch some awful illness because of someone elses ignorance. "

to NOT and Vaccinations Required wrote on May 7, 2008 1:39 PM:

" I am one that believes parents should have the right to weigh every decision that affects their children, without absolutely everything being government-controlled. How many times have you seen announcements concerning Dr's prescribed medicines that have caused serious illness, birth defects, and even death that at one time they assured us were safe.

Personal case in point. My younger brother received all the recommended vaccinations as a young child. He had begun to walk at the age of 9 months and was an extremely happy and healthy toddler. He woke up one morning when he was about 2 1/2 and could not walk or even stand. Although they told us he would never be able to walk again, thank goodness they were wrong, although it was a long, tedious process and he suffered greatly during that time, as our entire family did. To make a long story short, there was a cover-up on many levels, but after an investigation, the Drs. records confirmed our suspicions that they think he contracted polio FROM the vaccine.

We have to be pro-active in our medical care, as well as our children's care. Granted, there are some "nuts" out there; but for the most part, most parents want the very best for their children. Who else cares for our families more than we do? "

" at private schools. Although you have to ? someones judgment and ability to parent if they do not vaccinate their children. It is proven to save lives and in my opinion it is worse than exposing me second hand smoke. "

" I thought that vaccinations were required to enter school. How have these unimmunized students passed through the system without this requirement? "
