Case of measles involves one unimmunized student

The case of measles reported in Vernon County, Wednesday, involved one unimmunized student who attends Youth Initiative High School in Viroqua.

The State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services released the information late Wednesday saying state officials were working with the Vernon County Health Department to identify the source of the disease. However, they said it likely is not associated with an outbreak of measles in the southeastern part of Wisconsin.

Currently the state has seven laboratory-confirmed cases of measles, as well as two cases of rubella. State officials said both of these diseases can be prevented by vaccinations.

Beth Johnson, the Vernon County Health Department Director, said Thursday afternoon that her office is continuing to work with schools to get out more information on the local case. The Vernon County Health Department’s telephone number is 637-5251. The State of Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services can be reached at 608-266-9622.
