New air pollution control equipment for Dairyland Power Cooperative’s coal-burning plant in Genoa, will get a public hearing Tuesday.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources will hold the hearing at 1 p.m. at Stoddard Village Hall, 180 N. Main St.

Dairyland needs a construction permit to install new sulfur dioxide control equipment, as well as a modified operating permit for the plant which reflects the new equipment, said Charles V. Sans Crainte, Dairyland’s vice president of generation.

The hearing does not formally deal with Dairyland’s need to dispose of additional coal ash created by the new pollution control equipment. Dairyland is evaluating sites in the town of Harmony and near Vernon County’s existing landfill as potential ash landfills. Property owners and neighbors in the town of Harmony have organized in opposition to a landfill.

Sans Crainte said the site adjacent to the Vernon County Landfill is Dairyland’s “preferred alternative.” He said Dairyland expects to hold a public meeting sometime this summer to share the data it collects about the potential landfill sites.

" Word on the internet says it's a done deal and going in a couple of miles from Viroqua. And some people were worried about a few chickens! "

" The town of Viroqua does not want the ash either. We already have dump. "

" I encourage all of you who can to go and show your support for your neighbors whose farms and homes will be lost to the toxic ash landfill that will be needed when these scrubbers go online. Carry a sign or speak out in favor of a 5 year moratorium on installing these scrubbers so a recycling option can be developed. Help stop this madness. "
