Published - Monday, March 24, 2008 Gays Mills man stabbed five times in attack A Gays Mills man suffered five stab wounds Saturday night while his attacker was arrested Sunday and faces a felony charge. According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Miguel Vazquez, 45, said he was involved in an argument with Hernandez Carranza, 30, at a Gays Mills residence Saturday night. Carranza allegedly stabbed Vazquez five times in the hip and buttocks with a knife. Another man, Diodoro Vazquez, sustained cuts to his hands while trying to take the knife away from Carranza. Crawford County Sheriff Jerry Moran said the knife has not been recovered. Moran added that Crawford County Lieutenant Orrin Olson and Gays Mills Police Chief Wade Hutchison combined on what proved to be difficult investigation on Sunday. Moran said Miguel Vazquez and Carranza both lived at the same residents “along with several other individuals.” Vazquez did not immediately seek medical treatment, however, he went to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua on Sunday morning and received 14 stitches. Diodoro Vazquez did not seek medical treatment for his injuries. Carranza was taken into custody Sunday on a possible charge of first degree recklessly endangering safety, which is a class F felony in Wisconsin, with a maximum prison sentence of 12 1/2 years in addition to a $25,000 fine. Crawford County Court Commissioner James P. Czajkowski set a $1,000 cash bond for Carranza, Monday, with the stipulation he have no contact with either Miguel or Diodoro Vazquez, not consume alcohol, or possess a firearm or knife. Carranza is next to appear in Crawford County Circuit Court on April 7. Charges are being investigated by the Crawford County District Attorney’s office.
