County turns down moratorium; approves siting ordinance

The Vernon County Board voted 21-8 to turn down a plan to place a six-month moratorium on the creation of any farming facility with more than 500 animal units, Tuesday afternoon.

The action was taken as the county considers a manure storage permit pending for a 2,400-head hog confinement feeding operation planned by Jeff and Bonnie Parr of Ferryville.

The board did, however, approve two measures to address farm growth and land planning. On a pair of 15-14 votes, the board approved an animal siting ordinance limiting animal units and approved a measure to begin comprehensive planning.

The animal siting ordinance deals with farms with more than 500 animal units. That ordinance only gives the county oversight on the location of such an operation and is basically a permitting system. The ordinance is very similar to state legislation formulated for counties.

The board also approved beginning the comprehensive planning process by the one-vote margin.

More information on the county board’s action will be in this week’s edition of the Vernon County Broadcaster
.

" i know so many of you, and so many of you are farmers. do you understand what you voted for? i hope not, otherwise there would be NO explanation for your vote. this is not about farmers rights. farming is the heart and soul of vernon county, always has been, always will...well, i'm not sure if it always will be anymore. CAFOs are not farms. They are factories and these factories are bad for everyone involved except the owner and the corporation behind him. oh, by the way, has anyone figured out where the labor for this operation is going to come from. i'm sure it will be hardworking american citizens rights? like norwalk? when you sell your friends and neighbors up the river, you will likely find yourself up a creek. " The Vote was (23 no - 6 yes) on the moratorium, it was misstated at the end. Before you Print in the Paper next week, Please just Call Ron Hoff to make sure that Im right on the Facts, (or to find out if im Wrong). Also Can the Broadcaster Print a Roster on how the Vote Went on both Issues. Thanks "
