" I remember the vacuum tube tester that was located in the south east corner picture window up front. You could take all of the vacuum tubes out of your TV or radio and bring them into Dahl's and test them yourself. Now when your TV stops working you put it out on the curb and hope someone steals it. Nothing like progress! "

" I am a college student who is doing research on the history of Walgreens for one of my classes. Walgreens was founded in 1901 by a man named Charles Walgreen. He opened his own pharmacy in Chicago, and inside he also had a soda shop with Walgreen's orignial malted milk. Although it was a corporation, Walgreen's was run by three generations of the Walgreen family. Walgreen's is still run by the family values upon which it was founded. To me, it seems quite fitting that Dahl was bought out by Walgreen's as they are more similar than different. "

" Having grown up in Viroqua, I remember when Dahl's still stood on the NW corner of the intersection - across from the Dime Store, and had a soda fountain for the locals. Yes, there are alot of memories of Viroqua and its older establishments. Back then, Langus Drugs was new on the block.
I have been way from Viroqua for over 30 years, and where we now live, we blink and there is a new Walgreens going up every 2 - 3 miles apart. Shoot, they are taking over more that Walmart would ever consider doing. We have used Walgreens as a pharmacy, and to be honest - we prefer NOT to use them if we don't absolutely need to go there. The service is horrible. One waits in lines for unreasonable amounts of time - I was in one line do drop off an RX for over an hour. Then there are similar lines to pick your Rx's up in as well. The drive-up windows are even worse!
So very sorry to hear that Viroqua is getting this chain. Sure, Viroqua is much smaller than where I am at now, but it and the surrounding area has also grown since we moved away.
People in Viroqua, probably aren't too aware that this company is constantly expanding in the more metro areas which they (Walgreen's) are paying a whole lot MORE (millions) for the land to build on than anyone in Viroqua would even dream of getting for the land sold to them in Viroqua. Shoot, if Walgreens can pay so much in Metro areas for their locations - they really aren't hurting to the point that Viroqua should need to give them any tax incentives. Of course - that is just my opinon.
Viroqua used to belong to the Dahl's and the Dyson's, now it is Walmart and Walgreen's - kind of ironic.
Best wishes to you Kathy, I know the decision had to have been a truly agonizing one to make. If you don't do what you have to do, the big guys will still roll on into town and run you over no matter what. "

" How sad to see this come to an end. Although I do not live in Viroqua, I was raised there and have many wonderful memories of Dahl Pharmacy. When we come home for a visit I always stop in there several times. I remember when the old building had the wonderful soda fountain where we could get root beer floats, malts, etc. What fun that was! I'm so sad to hear about this. I guess all good things must come to an end at some point in life.

" Very sad to hear this news. I'm sure the family has given full consideration to all options, and have arrived at the most savvy resolution. I was employed by the Dahl family in the 1970's as a "high school" employee. I was there during the move from the opposite side of the street!
The entire Dahl family instilled stong values in their employees, insisted on professionalism, and I'm sure they've done so since my move to Philadelphia more than twenty years ago. I regret to say that I haven't experienced the "chain" stores striving to truly get to know their consumers, the way the "home-town" generations of family owned businesses have (which are going the way of Dahl's).
Best of luck to everyone associated with Dahl's!
Sincere regards, Larry G. Erickson "

" I am sad to hear about the sale to Walgreen's or to any BIG corporatation taking over the little guy. I feel bad for Chuck because he is a great man with strong family values and great work ethic! This pharmacy was built by his grandfather and handed down through the generations to family... I guess even the midwest has forgotten what a family business is. I spent many years hanging out at the store with my friends and still remember that familiar smell of the pharmacy. I will never forget how great that store was! I hope that it doesn't hurt the small businesses. I wish Kathy success in her future endeavors in Viroqua now that she has sold the family store. "

" I was very dismayed to hear Dahl Pharmacy is closing. I was just in there yesterday afternoon & it was very busy. I'm in there often & that seems to be the case everytime I go in yet friendly, accurate service has always been provided in a very timely manner. I would have continued my business at Dahl's like usual despite Walgreen's or the new hospital pharmacy & I personally believe the other customers would have too. When I've received such good service over the years, why would I want to go elsewhere??? I understand Kathy's concern for her employees & business but I am saddened that she had to be presented w/this kind of situation & the difficult decision. "

" THIS STINKS
Why would the city give a huge company $600,000?
Slowly and surely Viroqa is loosing it's charm stupid WALMART came along and look at the things we lost Super Value, K&L, Ted n Freds
Now along comes Walgreens and a new list of closings begins, what or who's next? All we need now is for the bypass to be completed and Viroqua will become a ghost town "

" this is a really sad thing... i remember going to dahl's when i was in middle school and stocking up on candy after school. it's really terrible that a big corporation like walgreens can knock out dahl pharmacy - after an amazing century of serving the people of viroqua. i'm ashamed that the city has wasted its money on a grant for walgreens to build a few blocks down from wal-mart - another huge corporation that is taking business away from local and/or family-owned stores like the dahl pharmacy.

" While it is sad to see such a great business give way to a national chain. I believe it is better than being "run out of business" by that same chain. It's hard to accept changes that seem to affect your community at its core, but the way our economy works makes those changes inevitable. Dahl's Pharmacy has been a great asset to Viroqua and I enjoyed the many times I shopped there, as did my mother! It's nice to hear that the current employees will be considered first for the new Walgreens and I hope they succeed in this new endeavor. Viroqua is made by the people who call it home, not the businesses that help it thrive! "

" This is a sad, sad, thing that's happening!Dahls is the only pharmacy that we have ever had this change is gonna be very hard and difficult on the elderly, i feel like this is when we as a great community will help them in need, Some one had mentioned to me the other day about small towns , and they said that you can go anywhere in any small town you have a WalMart, Walgreen, and a dollar store of some sorts and if you are wondering where you are at heck you don't know anymore, cause all the small towns are all the same now the 3 big different businesses,it's a sad thing to watch , our town being over come by this, but you tell me is it a good thing ? we can no longer say our little friendly town of Viroqua cause we are all the same now,and for Cathy ,well you have been the best i mean the best business owner and most caring person and helpful person that i know i'm glad you are gonna be still doing your love for life in helping everyone, you are the best!! and we love you and will support your dission at least that's one thing that these big business can't take away from us and that's our community support! " It will all work out" i hope!! "

" Another wonderful drug store has gone in favor of a huge chain.
I am retired in Mesa, Arizona and there is a Walgreen store every 2 miles here.
Although it is a good chain, it is sad to see the independent store owner give way to a chain store once again.

" This is a sad development for our community. The expansion of tax-subsidized corporations tilt the playing field against hardworking local businesses and our neighbors who own, manage and work in those businesses.
While local politicians and the corporations that put the squeeze on small businesses like to preach about "freedom of the marketplace" the handing out of tax subsidies warps the free market toward the pockets of those who already have too much.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Dahl family for the century of service they have provided to this community through two World Wars, the Great Depression and an often tough farm economy.
If you are expecting the same kind of community devotion from Walgreeds I've got some seaside vacation property to sell you on the Gulf Coast.
Oh, and what about the "new jobs" this deadbeat project was supposed to generate? The Dahl employees will simply be absorbed by Walgreeds. So much for the first line of lies we were fed on this project!
Thanks to the stunted wisdom, inverted vision and rubberry backbone of Viroqua politicians, we have lost a valuable business neighbor and now have a clunky cookie-cutter Walgreens just like the other 10,000 Walgreens across the nation blighting our Main Street.
And most bitter of all, this disgrace is fueled with our tax money!
Shame on the Viroqua City Council.

" IT SEEMS THAT THE MEANING OF TIF HAS BEEN MISUSED FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE BIG BUSINESS. WHEN THE TIF PROGRAM WAS FIRST INITIATED IT WS FOR COMMUNITIES TO REBUILD BLIGHTED AREAS WITHIN THIER COMMUNITY. TODAY IT IS JUST A WAY FOR ELECTED OFFICIALS TO JUSTIFY WHAT THEY FEEL IS WHAT IS BEST FOR THE COMMUNITY. HAVING MOVED AWAY FROM THE AREA 30 YEARS AGO TO THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE STATE; I HAVE SEEN THIS SAME ATTITUDE IN THE ELECTED OFFICIALS TO UTILIZE THESE TYPE OF FUNDS TO BRING LARGER AND MORE VARIETY OF BUSINESS TO THE COMMUNITY AT THE EXPENSE OF LOCAL FAMILY OWNED BUSINESS. IT IS TIME FOR THE CITIZENS TO START GETTING INVOLVED AND TO GET EDUCATED.
ALSO THERE HAVE BEEN APPROX. 12 WALGREENS CONSTRUCTED WITHIN THE PAST FEW YEARS IN SOUTH EASTERN WISCONSIN WITH MUCH THE SAME REQUEST FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. WITH THE MAJORITY OF THEM MEETING STRONG RESISTANCE FROM THE COMMUNITIES INVOLVED; AND THE ELECTED OFFICIALS WHO STOOD THEIR GROUND AND DID NOT SELL OUT THIER COMMUNITY. "
